Luteal Phase Seed Cycling Energy Balls

Have you heard that seed cycling throughout the menstrual cycle can support the creation and elimination of hormones so you can have better periods? 

What is Seed Cycling?

Seed cycling is a holistic dietary approach that involves consuming different seeds at different times of the menstrual cycle to support hormonal balance.

The menstrual cycle consists of 4 main phases:

  • Menstruation
  • Follicular Phase
  • Ovulation
  • Luteal Phase

Estrogen is the hormone that is present throughout the whole menstrual cycle, while progesterone is only present during the second half of the menstrual cycle (the luteal phase) after ovulation has occurred. That means estrogen is the dominant hormone during the first half of the menstrual cycle (the follicular phase) while progesterone is the dominant hormone in the luteal phase. 

The 4 menstrual cycle phases are driven by the rise and fall of hormones that trigger the next event or phase of the cycle. You can read more about the hormones and phases of the menstrual cycle in a blog post I have written here.

How to Seed Cycle?

Seed cycling is based on the premise that different seeds contain different types of essential fatty acids and lignans, which have different effects on hormone levels during the different phases.

Luteal Phase Seed Cycling Energy Balls

In the luteal phase, we not only want to support progesterone production but also support estrogen elimination. This recipe is packed with ingredients that contain B vitamins, calcium, magnesium, and fiber, which will help reduce sugar cravings, mitigate fluid retention, and support the organs of elimination.

Ingredients

  • 5 dates
  • ½ cup walnuts
  • ¼ cup sunflower seeds
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds
  • ½ cup pumpkin puree
  • 1 ½ cups oats
  • ¼ cup chocolate chips
  • A dash of cinnamon
  • 2 scoops of vanilla collagen

Directions

  1. Soak the dates for 5 minutes. Drain the water
  2. In a food processor, blend the first 5 ingredients until well combined.
  3. Add the remaining ingredients.
  4. Blend again, scraping down the sides until all ingredients are incorporated.
  5. Form into balls.
  6. Store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
